Understanding God’s Dual Expression of Love
God’s Universal Love for All Humanity
- Rooted in His divine nature (1 John 4:8, 16)
- Demonstrated through common grace (Matthew 5:45)
- Shown in patient restraint of judgment (Romans 3:23-26)
- Evident in His desire for all to repent (2 Peter 3:9)
The Limits of General Love
- Does not negate God’s justice (2 Thessalonians 1:6)
- Cannot override human rejection (Matthew 25:46)
- Will give way to wrath for the unrepentant (Romans 1:18)
God’s Saving Love for Believers
- Manifests in justification through Christ (Romans 5:1)
- Creates intimate relationship (John 14:21)
- Establishes eternal security (John 3:36)
- Expressed through covenantal faithfulness
The Paradox of Divine Love
We must hold these truths together:
- God genuinely loves all people
- God specially loves His children
- Both truths find fulfillment at the cross
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son…” (John 3:16)
Our Appropriate Response
- Receive His merciful love through repentance
- Rest in His saving love through faith
- Reflect His love to the world
