Why is it so tough for me to discover God at times in my life?

When God feels distant, we find Him by remembering His past faithfulness and meditating on His Word – not by trusting our feelings.

Finding God When He Feels Distant

Jeremiah 29:13-14 contains one of Scripture’s most magnificent promises – that those who seek God wholeheartedly will find Him. Yet in seasons of pain or transition, we often experience what feels like divine silence, leaving us wondering if God has abandoned us.

The Struggle of Divine Silence

  • Biblical Precedent – Even psalmists cried, “Will the Lord reject forever?” (Psalm 77:7-8)
  • Life’s “Divine Interruptions” – Job changes, relationships shifts, and new responsibilities can disrupt our spiritual equilibrium
  • The Tension – Our feelings of abandonment conflict with God’s promise to never leave us (Hebrews 13:5)

Two Keys to Rediscovering God’s Presence

KeyBiblical ExamplePractical Application
Remember God’s FaithfulnessPsalm 77:11 – “I will remember the deeds of the LORD”Keep a journal of God’s past provisions and interventions
Meditate on ScripturePsalm 77:12 – “I will consider all your works”Systematically reflect on God’s character revealed in His Word

Walking by Faith, Not Feelings

  • Reject False Conclusions – When emotions contradict God’s promises (2 Corinthians 5:7)
  • Embrace the Journey – View life’s interruptions as divine appointments
  • Develop Spiritual Disciplines:
    • Regular Scripture meditation
    • Prayerful reflection
    • Corporate worship

When God Seems Silent

  • Remember – God’s silence doesn’t equal absence
  • Reflect – On who God has shown Himself to be
  • Rest – In the certainty of His character
  • Respond – With obedience despite feelings

The Assurance of God’s Presence

While we may experience seasons where God feels distant, His promise remains unshaken. As we anchor ourselves in His Word and reflect on His faithfulness, we discover the profound truth that our seeking God always follows His first seeking us. “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you” (James 4:8).
