The Miracle on the Grocery Scales
A Mother’s Last Hope
Louise Redden entered the grocery store with slumped shoulders and worn shoes. The mother of seven, whose husband lay ill at home, approached the counter with trembling hands. “Sir,” she whispered to grocer John Longhouse, “could we charge just a few groceries? I’ll pay you back soon.” The grocer’s face hardened. “No credit without an account,” he snapped, motioning toward the door.
Divine Intervention
As Louise turned away, a watching customer stepped forward. “I’ll guarantee her payment,” he offered. The grocer, annoyed, devised a test: “Fine. Put your grocery list on my scales – you’ll get goods equal to its weight.” Louise bowed her head, wrote quietly, and placed her paper on the scale.
The Scales That Wouldn’t Balance
The iron weights crashed down. The grocer added bread…then milk…then meat – yet the scale refused to balance. Only when he grabbed the paper did he understand why. Written there was no list, but a prayer: “Dear Lord, you know my needs. I leave this in Your hands.”
“Before they call I will answer; while they are yet speaking I will hear.”
— Isaiah 65:24
The Weight of Faith
The grocer filled Louise’s bags in stunned silence. As she left, the mysterious customer pressed $50 into the grocer’s hand, whispering, “Worth every cent.” That day, all learned the immeasurable weight of:
- A mother’s desperate faith
- God’s perfect timing
- Divine mathematics where 1 prayer = infinite provision
The Prayer We Forget to Use
How often we struggle alone when heaven’s storehouse awaits! Louise’s story reminds us: Prayer isn’t our last resort – it’s our most powerful resource. While man measures by ounces and dollars, God measures by faith and need.
